This Teas of Japan Gift Box contains the following selection of Japanese teas:
Ashikita Izumi Wakocha is an unusual Japanese black tea from Tsuge in Kumamoto Prefecture. Crafted from the very rare Izumi cultivar plants, it produces a clear amber liquor. The lightly mineral taste has sweet notes of fruits and honey with a lasting floral and chalky aftertaste.
Ashikita Zairai Kamairicha is an unusual tea made mostly from a native cultivar in Ashikita District of Kumamoto Prefecture. This kamairicha is pan-fried, resulting in a balanced character. It has a savoury profile and a flavour that is grassy and sweet with floral and citrus notes. Winner of a 2* Great Taste Award in 2018.
Honyama Yabukita Sencha is a balanced and refreshing sencha from the historic Honyama tea growing area of Shizuoka Prefecture. Made from Yabukita cultivar plants, it produces a classic flavour with savoury vegetal and salty umami notes followed by a zesty yuzu finish.
Kirishima Hojicha is a popular and traditional Japanese green tea that undergoes high temperature roasting. This results in a lower tannin and caffeine content. The taste is nutty and roasted, more like a baked oolong than a green tea, with minimal grassiness and astringency.
Koji Fermented Kurocha is a highly unusual dark tea from a small experimental factory. Made from leaves and stems, it undergoes a one month period of yellow koji fermentation. The refreshing smooth taste has tangy and sweet notes of red fruits with a clean finish.
Okochi Yabukita Oolong is a lightly oxidised oolong made from Yabukita cultivar plants by a small artisanal factory in Shizuoka. Large leaves produce a light liquor with a floral aroma. The subtle and balanced taste has buttery, floral and sweet notes with a smooth lasting aftertaste.
Shimada Sakura Smoked Wakocha is a unique smoked black tea from Shimada in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is gently smoked over wood from cherry blossom trees, resulting in a smoky and fruity liquor. The warming flavour has complex notes of sour cherries, leather and tobacco.
Yame Gyokuro is a shaded green tea from the famous Yame tea growing area of Fukuoka Prefecture. Fine dark leaves produce an opaque green liquor with a savoury aroma. The rich taste has creamy umami flavours with notes of herbs and fresh green vegetables. Winner of a 1* Great Taste Award in 2023.
