Description

Organic Milk Oolong from Taiwan, winner of a 2-Star Great Taste Award in 2016.

What the Great Taste judges thought: “A good colour to the infusion, which has good brassica notes but is also reminiscent of coconut water and full cream milk – yet is clean and delicate in character.”

Our Award-Winning Organic Milk Oolong (有機金萱烏龍茶) is a wonderful and inimitable oolong created from the leaves of the Jin Xuan cultivar. It is particularly popular for the smooth creamy and milky aroma, texture and taste. This tea has full organic certification and is grown in Mingjian Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. November 2023 harvest.

We carry three Milk Oolong teas at Curious Tea from different terroirs of Taiwan. This Award-Winning Organic Milk Oolong is the most popular but the high mountain Gao Shan Jin Xuan Oolong and Alishan Milk Oolong are both beautiful examples of teas from the high mountain terroirs of Taiwan.

We are also pleased to be able to offer a fantastic roasted version of this tea. Organic Baked Milk Oolong utilises the same leaves, however it undergoes baking to bring out more complex floral, nutty and roasted flavours.

The Jin Xuan cultivar that is used to create this tea was developed in Taiwan in the 1980’s. It is also known as the Golden Daylily (Jin Xuan) or TRES #12, the number given to it by the Taiwan Research and Extension Station. Milk Oolong is also sometimes known as Nai Xiang (奶香) ‘Milk Fragrance’ in Chinese. Jin Xuan cultivar is very popular with farmers since the plants are more hardy and produce a higher yield. From a tea lover’s point of view, Jin Xuan is an attractive aromatic drink with a lovely sweet character.

As Milk Oolong has become extremely popular, please be aware of imitations. There are plenty of milk oolongs (whether from Jin Xuan cultivar or others) that are flavoured either with milk or vanilla in order to imitate or enhance the natural delicate taste that the leaves of Jin Xuan develop. Not only do these contain flavouring (often artificial), they also cannot be consumed by those who are lactose intolerant as they can contain milk or traces of milk. It is easy to spot a flavoured Milk Oolong, the natural tea flavour will be completely overshadowed by flavour of milk or any other additives that are used. When you brew the tea, most of the flavour will be gone from the first infusion and subsequent infusions will be dull and lacking in flavour. Any genuine Milk Oolong is always produced from the Jin Xuan cultivar and should not be flavoured or enhanced with additional flavours in any way.

Our Organic Milk Oolong is the real and authentic tea that we source directly from the plantation in Taiwan. It is a lightly baked tea that comes from an organic production that utilises the Jin Xuan cultivar grown around Mingjian Township in Nantou County, Taiwan. The tea master employs a slow baking process to bring out the best in this tea, an enriched smooth sweet flavour and creamy texture. The final product is a very satisfying drink that has a natural mild milky aroma, mouthfeel and taste. The clean liquor has light floral and sweet notes of cream and almonds.

This Taiwanese Organic Milk Oolong tea is best brewed at 90°C for 3-4 minutes according to your taste and can be brewed multiple times, increasing steeping time with each next brew if desired.
