Long Jing West Lake Dragon Well (西湖龍井) is a classic pre-Qing Ming early spring green tea and this original version from Weng Jia Shan (翁家山) next to Xi Hu is really one of the most authentic. Grown around the West Lake Scenic Area this tea utilises the traditional Long Jing Chang Ye (龍井長葉) Long Leaf cultivar. The resulting tea has a bright herbaceous character with characteristic nutty and creamy notes. This lot is a Ming Qian harvest, picked in early April 2020, before the Qing Ming Festival.
Long Jing is perhaps the most famous and popular teas in China and this West Lake Dragon Well is one of the most sought after types. Authentic Dragon Well (Long Jing, 龍井) originates from West Lake (Xi Hu, 西湖), near Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province. It is said by purists that only tea from the core Long Jing growing area of West Lake can be called an authentic Long Jing. The main production areas around West Lake are: Shifeng (Lion’s Peak), Wengjiashan (Weng Family Mountain), Yunqi (Cloud Dwell), Hupao (Tiger Run) and Meijiawu (Mei Family Dock). Dragon Well teas from Shifeng and Meijiawu are particularly sought after and attract very high prices. While Weng Jia Shan still lies within the core production area, as teas produced here are not the most famous ones, it is possible for us to source this authentic Dragon Well with an attractive price vs quality ratio.
This particular Long Jing West Lake Dragon Well has neat green and yellow flat polished leaves, which represents a classic appearance for this tea. The dry leaves have a nice green nutty and lightly creamy aroma. The liquor produced has a yellow-green colour with excellent clarity and a lightly vegetal, savoury aroma. The clean, light character of this Xi Hu Long Jing has a herbaceous and vegetal profile with sweet, nutty, creamy notes. The long-lasting refreshing aftertaste is clean, mouth-watering and has minimal astringency or dryness.
This Long Jing West Lake Dragon Well is best brewed with at 80c for 2-3 minutes and can be brewed multiple times.
